Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition characterized by low levels of the parathyroid hormone (PTH). This important hormone acts on the stomach and intestines to regulate how much calcium is absorbed from our diet. It also acts on the bones to control their breakdown.
The combination of these two functions means that PTH controls calcium levels in the body.
What are mood disorders?
Mood disorders are a general term for emotional states like depression or bipolar disorder that affect mood. It is normal to feel sad from time to time. However, if feelings of sadness and irritability are frequent and occur in spite of good things happening — or if you feel uncontrollably happy without reason — this may be an indication of a mood disorder. Some people might feel numb regardless of what’s happening in their lives.
If you have suddenly lost interest in hobbies you previously enjoyed, or feel tired no matter how much sleep you get, these can be other warning signs of depression and should seek help.
Mood disorders and hypoparathyroidism
Doctors don’t consider mood disorders a symptom of hypoparathyroidism. However, there are documented cases of patients with idiopathic hyperparathyroidism (hypoparathyroidism with an unknown cause) who show symptoms of depression and anxiety. These cases suggest that hypoparathyroidism and depression may be linked.
Additionally, a survey that measured quality of life compared patients with hypoparathyroidism to those with other chronic conditions, like diabetes, and found that people with hypoparathyroidism reported a lower quality of life in general. The study’s authors noted that the reasons for a poorer sense of life quality were not clear. But, they added, this finding may indicate that depression is more widely spread in hypoparathyroidism than doctors previously thought.
If you or a family member has hypoparathyroidism, you may want to discuss symptoms and warning signs of depression with your healthcare team.
If you are struggling with feelings of hopelessness or despair, please seek help immediately. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides 24-hour assistance for those in the U.S. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) serves people throughout Europe, including Turkey.
