Genetic Testing for Hypoparathyroidism

Genetic testing looks for alterations (or mutations) in a person’s genome. Certain types of changes might indicate the presence of a genetic disease, including some types of hypoparathyroidism, a rare condition characterized by low levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). What is the involvement of genes?…

Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism (Pseudo-PHP)

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare medical condition in which the body cannot produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH) from the parathyroid glands. PTH regulates the amount of phosphate and calcium in the blood by controlling how the body absorbs calcium during digestion and bone tissue breakdown.

What Is Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP)?

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare medical condition in which the body cannot produce enough parathyroid hormone (PTH) from the parathyroid glands. In contrast, people with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) produce normal amounts of PTH, but they lack the receptors that respond to PTH. PTH regulates the…

Hypoparathyroidism and Pregnancy

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder in which the body cannot produce enough of an important hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH controls calcium and phosphorus levels in the body by regulating how much calcium we absorb from our diet and how much we release…

Mood Disorders and Hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition characterized by low levels of the parathyroid hormone (PTH). This important hormone acts on the stomach and intestines to regulate how much calcium is absorbed from our diet. It also acts on the bones to control their breakdown. The combination of these…

FAQs About Congenital Hypoparathyroidism

Congenital hypoparathyroidism is a very rare condition, in which hypoparathyroidism occurs beginning at birth. Frequently asked questions about congenital hypoparathyroidism include: What is hypoparathyroidism? In hypoparathyroidism, too little of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) is produced by the parathyroid glands (four small nodes in the neck). Neck surgery, autoimmune…
